This photo of the priest with the garland is of Fr Tien at his first Mass in his home parish. He belongs to the Scalabrini missionaries and was ordained in Colombia south America with other companions of his congregation. He has cousins here who are Sisters of the Holy Cross. His two brothers are also religious, Fr Trung and Br Khuong who is a companion of Sean and Cong who are Rosminians. How did these Vietnamese students become Rosminians? There was a visit to Vietnam from Bishop Charles of New Zealand canvassing for vocations. It was suggested by the local bishop of Vihn, that some would prefer a religious congregation so Bishop Charles offered them the Rosminians, as he himself is an ascribed member of the Rosminian family.
During Mass, women and men would take up two sides of the church with girls and boys in the centre. It is remarkable to see a vast number of children from young ones in front to the older ones. Each group of children wears a coloured scarf as do our girl guides. Ages 6 to 9 at the front wear pink, 10 to 12 wear yellow, 13 to 14 green, 15 blue, 16 and over red. The scarves show that they belong to the Holy Eucharist Club and have games and catechism in their groups every week. Perhaps this mirrors their communist neighbours. It produces strong Catholic families and many vocations too. Do we have something to learn from this happy society of a Far Eastern country?
