St Vincent de Paul was a 17th century French priest who worked tirelessly for the poor and deprived, but also had a great influence on changing the Laws of the time as they affected the marginalised and poverty-stricken. In 1833, Frederick Ozanam and his fellow students founded a group in Paris to try and help those in poverty. Inspired by the work of St Vincent, they chose him as the Patron of their charity. Soon their charity spread across the world and a Conference of the SVP Society was founded in St Peter’s in 1898. Once again we thank the parish for all its support over many decades. Without this constant help the parish Conference could not carry out its work in seeking to aid those in poverty in all its forms. The SVP is one of the outreach groups in the parish that endeavours to make the parish present to a variety of needy people including families, single people, the elderly, refugees, homeless, ex-offenders, the unemployed and the marginalised. Over the last year St. Peter’s Conference helped well over 100 families and individuals on a regular or ad hoc basis. Our beneficiaries received practical help including food, clothes, financial assistance, furniture and transport as well as pastoral support. Collectively, Conference members spent well over 1,174 hours in carrying out these works. But without your prayers, and material and financial assistance, very little of this could have been achieved. For well over 100 years, the parish has always played a vital role in helping the SVP carry out its works and the Conference is very grateful for your ongoing support. Thank you and may you receive many blessings for your generosity and kindness.
