Rescued chalice

This restored chalice was discovered by a walker in Cardiff woods, who discovered a bright object under a bush, and brought it to the parish. The chalice had been ruined; the base was bent in half and the top cup was wrenched off. So we had only the base. It was incised in the base ‘To the memory of Fr Holman, 1928 to 1954, St Peters Cardiff. Oremus ad invicem’. (let us pray for one another). The chalice was one of those stolen from the sacristy in the year 2000 when the church was freely open as workmen went to and fro on the scaffolding to restore the ceiling of the sanctuary. While the others were presumably sold, this one had the inscription which indicated that it belonged to St Peters. This year, 2023 we did not know what to do with it, as a broken base, when John Dymond suggested to see what could be done with it. We see what a silver smith managed to do with it with John’s direction. Thanks be to God that it has returned to the church after 23 years’ absence. Fr Holman died in Newport 1955.
