Marriage is a lifelong union between a man & woman
One may ask, Pope Francis said, how it is possible for men and women, with all the limitations and fragility of human beings, to commit to
“a union that is faithful and forever and from which a new family is born?” Confronted with this question, and with the crises facing many
families today, the Church needs to renew awareness in the gift of grace received through a sacramental marriage, he said.
The gift received in the sacrament of matrimony, is “an irrevocable gift, a source of grace which we can always count on.”
The word “bond,” the Pope noted, “is sometimes looked upon with suspicion, as if it were an external imposition, a burden,
a ‘tether’ in opposition to the authenticity and freedom of love. If, on the other hand, the bond is understood precisely as a bond of love,
then it is revealed as the core of marriage, as a divine gift that is the source of true freedom and which guards married life.” (CNA)
Tips to improve marriages centre on prayer
Father Polycarp Fernando said: “...All Christian marriages are between three parties: husband, wife and God. God calls us to
married life so, He must be in the centre.” To keep marriages strong he recommends remembering and pondering the Scriptures
chosen for the marriage ceremony. Also, couples must find time and learn to pray together and with children when they come.
“More than just Sunday Mass — praying together at home is a must.”
Deacon Dave Elchert has been married for 58 years to his spouse, Donna. “First and foremost and most importantly,
stay close to Christ and the Eucharist,” was his advice for an enduring marriage. Secondly, being considerate of one another
and anticipating and filling the desires of your spouse goes a long way. Get to know your spouse inside and out, he recommended.
He also advises couples “Don’t give up when times are tough. Keep the faith and pray.” (Today’s Catholic)
