Q: Is Priesthood for life?
Priest: Priesthood in the Catholic Church is a calling for life. Even retired priests want to assist parishioners in some way and in St Peters we were so happy to have had Fr Jim McKnight with us till he was 91. He shared so many human gifts and brought people together.
Q: How old do I have to be to go to seminary? Is there an age limit to become a priest?
Priest: Seminaries will not take people these days until they have done basic life skills, at college or at work. No longer are young people accepted for these studies as a certain maturity is required and that seems to take longer in our times. Older people will have to be very adaptable.
Q: Do I need to be fit and healthy to join the seminary?
Priest: Fitness and health is important for a life of ministry to be ready to visit hospitals, prisons and homes sometimes at night. Ongoing training is given for special ministries. Spiritual health is also important as the person should be frequent at Mass and the sacraments and develop prayer before the Lord in Adoration.
Q: Can priest have his own possessions?
Priest: Priests can have possessions but they will be ready to change where they live and work at the direction of obedience so may not have the place they prefer to live. Religious have a vow of poverty so share what they have with their community and do not have personal accounts.
