Catholic: If we called Jesus the Son of God, I’m not sure if St Joseph could truly be called the father of Jesus…
Priest: Some people during the early Christianity shared the same uncertainty, because they did not want people to think that St Joseph was Jesus’ biological father, and the belief in the virginity of Mary be tainted in any way. But St Augustine cleared up the matter by stating that St Joseph, though not the biological father of Jesus, is nonetheless a real father to Jesus because he exercised fatherhood toward Jesus that was authoritative, affectionate and faithful. When Mary and Joseph finally found the lost Child Jesus after 3 days, Mary said: “Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety”, note she didn’t say: “Your foster father and I have been looking for you.” Although it isn’t wrong to call St Joseph the foster father, but as St Josemaría Escrivá said: ‘…it might make us think of the relationship between Joseph and Jesus as something cold and external’. Indeed, St Joseph’s fatherhood was more than a legal guardianship, entrusted by God the Father with taking care of the human nature, growth and development of His Son into the fullness of his manhood. And St Joseph gladly dedicated his entire life to Jesus Christ’s upbringing: he adored Jesus; lead the Holy Family to flee and hide in Egypt against all odds to protect Jesus from Herod; was greatly anxious at Jesus’ disappearance and looked 3 days for him with Mary; although poor, but gave Him everything the best he could; unreservedly taught Him everything he knew; moreover, he offered decades of sacrificial love and interior suffering for Jesus and Mary after hearing Simeon’s prophecy. All these clearly showed his paternal relationship with Jesus was personal, authoritative yet affectionate, moral yet loving. Despite Jesus was not his biological son, yet he poured out all his heart and fulfilled every aspect of his paternal role. Have you ever thought that Jesus wants you to have St Joseph as your loving spiritual father? (To be continued)
