How to say the rosary
In order to gain the indulgences attached to the recitation of the Rosary, it is necessary to meditate on the mysteries; but it is sufficient for those who do not know them to contemplate any one of the mysteries of the passion of Jesus Christ, as the scourging, death, etc. The Rosary must be recited with devotion; and here call to mind what the holy Virgin said to St. Eulalia, that she was better pleased with five decades said with pauses and devotion, than with fifteen in haste and with less devotion. Therefore, it is better to say the Rosary kneeling, and before some image of Mary, and at the beginning of every decade to make an act of love to Jesus and Mary, by asking some favour. It is also better to say the Rosary with more than one person, because one who says the Rosary alone only gains the merit of one Rosary, but if he says it together with thirty other people he gains the merit of thirty Rosaries. This is the law of public prayer. How profitable, how advantageous! The life of Bl Hermann (a Premonstratensian Father) tells us that at one time he used to say the Rosary attentively and devoutly while meditating on the Mysteries. The Blessed Virgin then used to appear to him in brilliant light and resplendent beauty and majesty. But as time went by, Hermann's fervour diminished and he fell into the habit of saying his Rosary hurriedly and inattentively. Then one day the Blessed Virgin appeared to him again, but she was now far from beautiful. Her face was wrinkled, sad and haggard. Bl Hermann was astonished at the change in her, but Our Lady explained: "Hermann, I am appearing to you in this form to show you how you now regard me in your soul - as a woman to be despised and of no importance. Why do you no longer greet me with respect and attention when meditating on my Mysteries and praising my privileges?"
