Catholic A: Maybe I should ask for forgiveness, but they are not big sins: I did not kill or robbed the bank, I don’t want to waste the priest’s time...
Catholic B: At the end of the day, a sin is a sin. In God’s spotless purity, even a tiny sin is like a grain of sand in the eye. And because God loves us so much, it hurts Him whatever sin we commit; like in a love relationship, it doesn’t have to be a slap or a punch, just a scorn to that person will still hurt because that person is in love with the one who did it. Although there is venial and mortal sins in the Catholic Church, but many venial sins will eventually led you into mortal sin, because each time we sin, we lose a little bit of God’s grace and become more easier to fall into the devil’s trap, deeper and deeper, finally our conscience become so fast asleep that we commit sin without realising and begins to live with it! Also according to Canon Law, we are obliged to make our confession at least once a year or every time we are conscious of mortal sin.
Catholic A: Why Our Lord instituted confession? Why couldn’t we just tell God in our hearts that we are sorry?
Catholic B: Sin is pride and the telling of it is a humiliation and therefore it is a reparation for the sin. Furthermore, in the natural order, does it not hurt more if you leave a boil closed? We pierce boils, why? In order to release the pus. So Our Lord would pierce souls in order to release the evil that was in it.
